Warming the Bin

To create great vermicompost in any type of commercial quantities, it helps to have a large worm bed (in this case, what's known as a "continuous flow-through" bin or CFT). Our CFT is 4 feet wide by 8 feet long, and 2.5 feet deep. Because it's in our unheated barn in upstate New York, we need to be sure the worms stay warm through the winter.

In the true spirit of recycling, I repurposed old Christmas rope lights my brother-in-law was going to toss, since he was switching to energy efficient lights. The old ones produce nearly as much heat as they do light — not good for holiday lighting, but great for helping to warm a worm bin! And it's festive, year-round (though once the bin is filled, no one will see the lights).
